Closure of UNPOS

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), established on 15 April 1995, supported the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation efforts. Its mandate ended on 3 June 2013, with its responsibilities transferred to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

Presidential Election Committee agrees Somali Presidential election date: Monday, 10 September

Mogadishu, 31 August 2012 - The newly formed Presidential Election Committee met yesterday in Mogadishu and agreed on the date for the Somali Presidential election, which will now take place on Monday, 10 September.

Following the meeting, the newly elected Speaker Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawaari also announced the formation of an Election Office comprised of a Committee that will adopt the rules and organize the electoral processes. General Muse Hassan, the former Interim Speaker, was appointed Chief Electoral Officer.

The announced electoral timetable is as follows:

  • 1- 2 September: Preparation of the Committee;
  • 3 - 6 September: Nominations open;
  • 7 - 8 September: Presentation of Candidates to Parliament;
  • 9 September: Lobby day;
  • 10 September: Election day

"This is yet another positive step towards ending the transitional period and ushering in a new, more representative Somali government," said Special Representative of the Secretary-General Dr. Augustine P. Mahiga.
