Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Joseph Butore, Second Vice President of the Republic of Burundi

Today, the Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Joseph Butore, Second Vice President of the Republic of Burundi.

They discussed potential United Nations assistance to ongoing regional efforts to address the situation in the country. In this regard, the Secretary-General offered the full support of the United Nations to find a peaceful solution to the problems currently confronting Burundi.  He assured the Vice President that the UN remains committed to working with Burundi to strengthen stability and economic development.

The Secretary-General expressed his strong concern over the continuing political crisis and incidents of politically-motivated violence in Burundi. He underlined the gravity of the human rights situation and urged the Government to expedite investigations and judicial proceedings against individuals responsible for violations. The Secretary-General also called for an inclusive political dialogue to resume without further delay.
